I just got an e-mail this morning saying that our domain name, www.ExponentialChurch.tv had automatically renewed as per my contract with the hosting company. What this simply means is that it’s been 2 years to the day since I officially decided on what the church name was going to be.

It was in October of 2009 that God gave me the vision for Exponential. The next few months consisted of making sure this was God’s will for our lives and not just a bad reaction to the pepperoni pizza I had eaten the night before. A part of this process took Lisa and I out to San Diego for a week-long church planter’s assessment. It was a grueling week of assessments, psychological testing, team exercises, quizzes, presentations and constantly having 25+ people evaluate your every move.

Although we had previously discussed names for the potential church, God didn’t confirm any until Lisa and I were back in our hotel room after yet another intense day of evaluation. That was two years ago today and of course the name chosen was Exponential Church.

The reason for this was quite simple. During my years working for Purpose Driven Ministries, part of the teaching I did for pastors was about Exponential Faith Thinking. Essentially this means that you must have a vision, goals and dreams SO BIG that if God doesn’t show up and do something miraculous, those dreams and goals will never come true.

By thinking this big, it does two things for you. First, it will drive you to your knees in prayer begging God to do something great on your behalf. Since you know you can’t do it without Him, this big vision will force you to be utterly and totally dependent on Him. Second, when your dreams and goals are fulfilled, you won’t possibly be able to receive the credit for it…all the praise will go to how great God is, not how smart you are.

This whole line of thinking fit perfectly with the vision God had given me. What I was experiencing in San Diego was only confirming that. It’s a huge vision that I’m not nearly smart enough to accomplish without God doing something great in and on my behalf. The name Exponential also described the type of impact I know God is calling us to have. Yes, we are starting in Harrisburg and that is our primary place God has called us to reach, but I truly believe that we’re going to do things that will make an eternal difference in our state, nation and world.

Now you might be saying, “That’s awesome but what about the .tv part?” Glad you asked. So 2 years ago today as God confirmed the name, I immediately decided to go ahead and buy the domain name. One problem… .com, .org, .net, .info and many of the other common extensions are owned by others. Immediately God reminded me of that a couple of churches that I greatly admire have the .tv extension…in fact some of them even made it a part of their name since it’s still uncommon here in the US. A quick search and sure enough www.ExponentialChurch.tv was available. A month later when we filled out all of our legal paperwork, I included the .tv in the name so people won’t have to guess how to find us on the web.

So now you know. Two challenges for you: First, are you thinking Exponentially in your own life and ministry? Life is too short to waste it on small dreams. Second, if you’re a part of ExponentialChurch.tv are you serving in some way? The vision is too big and the stakes too high for you to simply sit on the sidelines as a spectator. Discover what it is that God is calling you to do to help make this Exponential vision a reality!

Very happy with today!

3 more people started a relationship with Jesus.

Many people commented how much they needed to hear and now apply the message I did on having proper priorities when it comes to how to spend our time.

As Chad said earlier in the week, today was reset day as far as attendance goes since the last two weeks were holiday weekends.

We had a really great sized crowd…hope to keep it going.

Alright as for the other details of the day…

Nice to be back on a normal schedule and without a lot of extra stuff.

Band was done set-up and warm-up early (actually normal time) but after the past few weeks it seemed way early.

During set-up, Lisa called me and said her car broke down so I had to run out to get her.

Once I got there though it started working again…it’s been acting weird the last few weeks so we’ll have to take it in this week for “repairs”.

The band started today with a cover of Coldplay’s song “Paradise”. As always they did awesome but I know Bill was glad to not have to do any more Wooooo’s…especially that high.

Speaking of, he said something awesome during his prayer that Spirit spoke to me about. He said that “today was going to be a day where people go God’s way full-heartedly”. It hit me in the moment that yes as a result of each message people either go FULL-heartedly or FOOL-heartedly.

Aren’t you glad we have a choice!

Speaking of choices, the message today was about making sure as we start a New Year that we don’t misuse our time chasing our things but instead prioritize our relationship with God and family.

The gist of the message was that someone is going to feel cheated, but we get to choose who or what that will be.

For the first time ever, I accidentally forgot to put my phone on vibrate and it went off during the sermon.

You’ll just have to listen to the message to see how I handled it.

Love hanging out in the lobby and hearing people’s stories afterwards…God is doing some amazing stuff in our midst!

Next week we start the “Little Faither” series on how to overcome worry.

Here’s a Facebook invite you can share.

Also as I mentioned today the invite cards got delayed in shipping.

If you want some when they come in this week (and you haven’t already let us know), email me and I’ll make sure they get to you.

One of our core values at Exponential is that we must all become World-Class inviters.

Please help to do your part to make sure your family members, friends, neighbors and co-workers come out for this series!

This is such an easy series to invite people to since everyone wants to overcome worry…don’t waste this golden opportunity.

Getting ready to head out to WV to spend New Years with my long-time Life Group peeps so I’ll make this short and sweet.

Today was crazy.

We attempted (and ultimately pulled off) recapping everything we did in 2011 in just 75 minutes.

Turned out to be about 83 minutes which made tear down that much more stressful as people were coming in to watch a movie in our theater.

Set-up was as equally not fun since we pulled back out 5 different series sets and reassembled them as one big jumbo set.

Need…more…extension cords…

The entire team again this week came in early in order to pull this all off.

They as usual did a great job with only a few minor speed bumps along the way.

You can hear the entirety of today’s Experience here.

I shot some video and may post it tomorrow or Monday if it came out alright.

In the meantime here are the links to the various videos we showed as a part of today’s Experience.

Single People Are Losers

Charlie Sheen Visits Exponential Interview

Winning By Giving

1 year Birthday

Seriously I don’t know what to say about today other than crazy…it’s such an unusual format but from what I heard people really appreciated it.

God has been so good to us this year and it was fun looking back on everything and evaluating how much we’ve grown individually and as a church.

All of the application questions are attached to the message audio above so please make sure to review each one and challenge yourself to grow even more in 2012.

Afterward Lisa and I did lunch with many members of my former team in Chambersburg…they were all impressed at the level of excellence we’re able to do things considering our portable environment.

Good also to see at least 5 other churches represented in attendance today.

Doing the Experiences these past 2 weeks on Saturday instead of Sunday seemed to really work out well…glad we did it.

Ok gotta get on the road…praying everyone is safe tonight and that 2012 is your best year yet!

I know at Exponential we truly do believe that the best is yet to come…can’t wait to partner with you in making a difference!

Between online listens and downloads, our average sermon is heard again beyond Sunday morning slightly over 100 times. Here are the top 10 most listened to and downloaded messages from 2011.

“Finding the One“- The first four messages on this list all come from the “One” series on marriage, dating, relationships and sex. This message was about making sure Jesus is first in your life.

“Q & A“- People submitted their questions about anything to do with relationships and I answered.

“Lets Talk About Sex“- Duh…what do you think it’s about.

“Finding the Two“- Once Jesus is first in your life, how do you find and then keep a spouse until death do you part.

“The Biggest Lie You Tell Yourself“- The conclusion to the “ME*TRADE” series. In it I discussed how each morning we wake up on a quest for happiness instead of a quest for truth…which leads to…the biggest lie you tell yourself.

“Renewing Your Mind“- The opening message in the ME*TRADE series where we learned that if you’re not happy with the outcomes of your life, it’s not about going back and making different decisions, but rather changing your thinking which leads to better decision-making.

“The Truth About Obedience“- My wife Lisa’s message on 6 steps to being obedient to God which was a part of the “Jonah” series.

“Generation Next or Now“- The opening message in the “I Believe In You” series speaking to the Millennial Generation to not put off making a difference with their lives now!

“The Jonah in All of Us“- The opening message in the “Jonah” series about how when God speaks to us there always seems to be an easier option to get out of it, but beware because if you choose that path storm clouds and perhaps worse are about to come.

(TIE) “The Two People Everyone Needs in Their Life“- Part 3 of the “I Believe in You” series about the value of having a mentor and being a mentor to someone else.
“One Simple Truth“- Conclusion of the ME*TRADE series where I challenged everyone to realize God knows better what’s best for our lives than what we do.

What an awesome day!

We had 15 people make professions of faith in Jesus!

We also broke our attendance record.

Not bad for having our Christmas Experience on Saturday instead of Sunday.

Honestly I had no idea going into this morning whether switching to Saturday morning was a good idea or not.

For multiple reasons it seemed to be the right decision but I figured it would either be a hit or a complete flop.

Thanking God this evening that He honored our efforts and that we in turn were able to honor Him through our efforts.

Just like last year’s Christmas Eve Experience, set-up was a bit stressful because of all that we were trying to pull off.

So thankful for the entire team. They came in at 7am this morning and we finally finished up getting ready at 9:47.

Considering I had told everyone last week to be in their seats at 9:50, we were cutting it real close.

Special thanks to Andy, Mike and Cris for the extra work they accomplished from the tech side. Your hard work paid off…thanks!

As always the band…Bill, Gayle, Jeff, Mike, Steve and Aaron did a fantastic job.

They put in a lot of work Thursday night and this morning to get ready and the results were fantastic.

This week they were also joined for one song by Jake Sellers on drums…he did awesome for his first time with us and considering how young he is…thanks Jake!

Here’s the opener we did called, “Let There Be“…I put together a video for it and Gayle as usual killed it!

The other special we did was our rockin version of “O Come O Come Emmanuel“.

And yes for the 2nd year in a row we used trash cans.

Who says we’re not traditional?

I actually had an “older” guy stop me in the lobby who was disappointed we didn’t do “The Little Drummer Boy” again.

Funny thing is he was being serious.

Again couldn’t be prouder of my team…from the parking lot to the “pew” our people serve with all of their hearts and with excellence!

My message focused on how King Herod missed out on what should have been so obvious…the birth of God Himself just a few miles away.

Of course the application was not to miss out on Jesus in the midst of the busyness of the Christmas season.

You can listen to the entire message here.

Or you can watch the Experience from start…to almost finish here. (Note: it is uploading as of 6:30pm. It should be live by 9-10pm).

Unfortunately the camera battery died a few minutes before we ended.

What you miss in the video is me leading the 15 through a prayer to receive Jesus and then everyone standing to sing along to the remainder of “It is Well”.

Yep…that’s right the hymn…done as a hymn not Exponential style.

A couple of brief announcements followed and then we closed with the “Party” song which you can see the band perform from last week’s Experience.

FYI…on of the announcements I gave was the results of our Contagious Christmas Challenge…you/we gave enough that we were able to help 50 needy families have a Christmas that wouldn’t have otherwise! Way to go Exponential!

Again it was an incredible day…what’s weird is coming home and the NFL was on anyway…feels just like a Sunday except it wasn’t.

So glad we decided to worship and celebrate today!

In fact…we’re going to do it again next Saturday at 10am to avoid New Years Day.

Hope to see you then for the conclusion of the “Party” series.

As I announced it’s called “The After Party” and will be a recap of every series we did in 2011.

Going to be an awesome time looking back on God’s faithfulness.

Another great day!

Had 2 more people start a relationship with Jesus!

As I mentioned last week we’re ramping up our set each week throughout the Christmas season so it made for another long yet productive set-up time this morning.

Instead of trying to explain it all, I’ll show you through video.

Thanks to Cris Cramer for videotaping the opener song and worship set.

Not bad for a Flip cam.

Not a huge crowd today but those that were there were pretty energetic.

I continued the Party series today with a message entitled, “Bust a Move”

You can watch the first few minutes of it here…

…or listen to the entire thing here.

We’ll call it a day of rants…can’t really say I left anything unsaid.

Also said some things…”peachy keen”…that I’m not sure where it came from.

As I said, you never know why the Spirit may have you say something…gotta trust “peachy keen” really needed to be heard by someone…at least that’s what I’m telling myself.

Seriously I think it’s a message that many people need/needed to hear.

Had a bunch of cool conversations afterward…great questions…love that people are seeking the truth and how to live it out.

As a reminder, we’ll be meeting on Saturday morning for the next 2 weeks.
Saturday December 24, 10am
Saturday December 31, 10am

Great day!

Had to start the morning out scrapping the ice of the windshield and wearing my beanie…definitely the coldest Sunday morning we’ve had so far this “winter”.

Had to use the quotes because I know some of you would correct me and say it’s not yet winter…ok but did you really expect me to say it was the crispest fall morning so far. Yeah right.

Oh wait I did just say it…

OK here’s the deal…it was cold this morning.

Anytime we start a new series it’s always an adventure since we have no way to have tested the new stage design up until that time.

With this one Bill built 4 “candy cane” looking contraptions with multiple color Christmas lights strung between them.

What’s cool is we can control each color independently…which is harder than it sounds.

In fact it required 8 extra extension cords since you can’t put them into a power strip and then to the lighting control…each one needs to run separate.

All that to say…we had to send Gayle out on an extension cord run since we were short a few.

Amazingly we were short even with taking 6 of our normal lights out of the equation altogether.

We’ll add them in over the coming weeks.

So set-up and practice were longer than normal this morning.

Another factor was that Steve our drummer missed practice on Thursday night…something about getting engaged or something.

Congrats Steve & Kelsey!

In any case, the band did a great job pulling it altogether.

However, the crowed energy was down today…not sure why.

Again using a however…on this day last year we had one of our worst days we’ve ever had…so today was light years better.

Chad did a great job preaching the first message in the Party series.

His message was about getting an invitation and not being left out.

You can listen to it here.

Since he preached that allowed me a chance to walk around a see some other things I normally don’t get to.

I twice stopped by and watched Chelsea and the kids in the theater next door.

Awesome to see them worshiping, having fun and learning about Jesus.

Also spent some time in the nursery/toddler area where one of our normal toddlers was crying hysterically.

I tried picking her up and holding her but to no avail.

So I put her down and quietly slipped away before anyone noticed I had left.

It’s always good to have days like today where I can walk around evaluating things without the “pressure” of knowing I have to preach.

Got some things we need to work on but for the most part we’re light years ahead of where I thought we’d be at this point in our now slightly over 1 year of existence.

God has and is so good to us!

Lisa has been out-of-town all week-long so afterward my mom, dad, sister and I went to lunch together.

To the best of our recollection it was the first time in about 20 years since it was just the 4 of us together to eat.

Not sure why but I took a longer nap this afternoon than a typical Sunday.

That shouldn’t have been…I didn’t really do anything today.

Lisa flies back tomorrow…can’t wait to see her!

Next week we’ll continue the Party series with a message I’m doing called, “Bust a Move”.

Once you’re at the party, it does you no good to stand against the wall…time to get out on the dance floor.

What’s that have to do with the Bible and your life?

You’ll have to join us to find out.

Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Saturday, December 24 & 31 at 10am which will take the place of our normal Sunday morning Worship Experiences.

Well this is going to be short and sweet.

The reason…I can’t remember much of today.

The last thing I said to Lisa before I went to sleep last night was, “My stomach doesn’t feel right”.

I’ll spare you all the details…but let’s just say I was right.

Apparently the milk I had with my cereal last night must have been bad.

It smelt ok but Lisa this afternoon saw that it was about a week expired.

So with my energy drained and feeling extremely nnauseous, I made my way to the theater this morning.

To be honest everything seemed to be going in slow motion.

Big thanks to the entire team for picking up the slack.

Basically I sat around the whole time, got up and preached and then went home.

I’m told the message came out ok.

I was really excited about this one and can’t imagine it came out nearly the way I had hoped.

What I do know is that God’s Spirit gave me supernatural strength that I didn’t have.

Thank you Jesus!

You can listen to the message here.

This was the end of the “Just Walk Across the Room” series.

Today’s message was about how God personally has a vision for your life.

Hope everyone grasps it and lives it out.

Next week we start the “Party” series as we celebrate the Christmas season.

Make sure you’re there and make sure you bring along a bunch of people because we’re going to party hard!

Also don’t forget to mark your calendars…Christmas and New Year’s weekend we’ll be meeting on Saturday morning at 10am instead of Sunday.

Let me say that again. Mark your calendar to come to church on Saturday, December 24th and 31st at 10am.

Sorry I missed out on joining everyone at Infinito’s this afternoon for lunch but I heard another big crowd showed up.

I got a nap in and I’m keeping food in and down…in fact, I’m really hungry and keep eating which is a good sign!

Hope everyone has a great week…see you Sunday for the “Party”!

On Sunday at ExponentialChurch.tv I shared a message called, “The Two Stories of a Difference Maker“. One of those is knowing how to tell God’s story in a clear and passionate way. The other story is your story of how you either came into a relationship with Jesus or how a certain aspect of your life has changed as a result of your relationship with Him. I challenged everyone to write out their personal testimony and then email it to me so I could review it and make suggestions.

It’s been awesome over the past 2+ days now to have received so many stories of life change. All but one of them so far though have needed to be tweaked for various reasons. I fault myself for some of this so I wanted to do this post to help those of you who are still working on the assignment. So here are a couple of things that either I failed to say or a reminder of what we’re trying to accomplish.

Remember who you’re doing this for- This is probably my fault for not making it clear enough but remember not to write it as how you would tell it to me. Think about a neighbor or friend who is far from God…how would you tell it to them.

Write it conversationally- This is my big regret from Sunday. I should have made it clear that even though you’re writing it down so it will ultimately be easier to memorize, you need to write it the way you talk. So my suggestion is try saying some things out loud and then write down what felt most natural.

Reminder: Keep it under 3 minutes- Most have done a pretty good job of keeping it short but some have gotten a bit too detailed. Usually where this happens is giving extra travelogue that doesn’t really add to the story for the listener. For example, a few people have mentioned specific people by name and exact locations down to the street address. All this will do is get your listener thinking about “do I know that person” or “do I know where that is” instead of concentrating on the real story, which is how much Jesus has changed your life.

On the flip side…give some details- Now you’re really confused right? A couple of the emails I have gotten were only bullet points. Again keep in mind the purpose of this exercise is to have written out your full story in the way that you would say it. So for example if I just point the bullet point of “anxious” as one of my before Jesus problems, I still don’t know what I’m going to say in the moment. For each “problem” you should have a 1-2 sentence example of that. Let me give you an example from my own life showing you both the wrong way to do it (#3 above) and the right way to do it (#4 here).

In our hypothetical situation lets say your friend mentions how stressed out and anxious they are. Here’s the wrong way
to do it. “You know before I became a Christian I used to be the same way. I remember back to the spring of 1993. I was
a sophomore in college at Hagerstown Community College. I was in Mr. Baker’s accounting class getting ready to take my
final and was so nervous about it that I literally threw up I was so nervous and anxious about it. But then later that
summer Keith Skidmore and Marvin Bower shared with me…”

Notice all the extra travelogue that doesn’t really help advance the story. I could say the exact same thing this way. “You
know before I became a Christian I used to be the same way. In fact, I remember once being so nervous about taking a
test in school that I threw up beforehand. But then two men shared with me…”

What I’m trying to get you to see is that there is a big difference between the written word, where you want a lot of details,
and the spoken word where you want just enough details to not distract from your main theme.

5. Avoid the Christianese- Think about how you would communicate to someone who has never stepped foot in a church or ever
opened up a bible. Despite my warnings on Sunday about avoiding these, this has been the biggest thing that I keep seeing over
and over. Here are some examples of words and phrases that people have included that I’ve told to go back and fix.

My repentance prayer

Watered the seeds my parents had planted

Jesus lives in my heart

Asked Jesus into my life

Been redeemed

Got saved

Made Jesus Lord and Savior

Received salvation
As I said Sunday…all of the above things are true…but just not the best way to say them in a way a person far from God will understand. As a game, try to come up with the better way to say each of the above. If I think of anything else, I’ll put it in another post. In the meantime…happy writing. Can’t wait to hear the stories of how God makes opportunities available for you to share your 3 minute story in a humble, interesting, and clear way!

Good news, bad news kind of day.

The bad news is I thought my sermon was one of my worst ever.

I just never got into a good flow.

Usually when I’m not really feeling a message, God takes over and it all seems to click.

Not today though.

However, just because I wasn’t feeling it doesn’t mean that God didn’t still use it.

Had a few people tell me this was one of their favorite messages they’ve ever heard me do.

And now for the good news…

4 more professions of faith today!

Like last week i find this slightly amusing since today’s message was on how to verbally share your faith with other people.

Ironic huh? Taught on how to share your faith and 4 people realized that they first need to have faith.

You can listen to the message here if you’re interested.

As a reminder…practice the Bridge Illustration (can be downloaded at the above link under the documents section) and don’t forget to email me your 3 minute testimony so I can review it and make suggestions.

As for the rest of the day, it was kind of weird as well.

Normally we have 40-43 people serve on a Sunday to make everything happen.

Today so many people were gone because of the holiday that we only had about half of that number.

Considering half of those are in the band or tech area, it made for a very short staff.

However, everyone stepped up and did what they could where they could and we didn’t seem to skip a beat.

Love my team! What an awesome group of servants.

Surprisingly, attendance was actually really good today even with a lot of our regulars away.

That’s a good sign that perhaps we’re going to get some good momentum going.

The rest of the day was pretty much as normal…

Set-up and tear-down both went quickly and smoothly.

The band as always did a great job.

It was great to have George and Rebecca Spangler with us today.

George is the current pastor at the Camp Hill Church of God and will be planting Turning Point Church next fall.

We’ll be sharing with you in the coming months ways that we can partner with George to help him as he starts from scratch just like we did in the fall of 2010.

One of our core values is that, “It takes all types of churches to reach all types of people”. We’re honored to be able to help another church here in the local area reach the 425000 that currently don’t have a relationship with Jesus.

Next week we wrap-up the “Just Walk Across the Room” series by looking at having a personal vision for your life that includes being an eternal difference maker.
